Is Underworld Ascendant worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players who enjoy dungeon exploration with multiple approaches
- RPG fans who want to mix combat, stealth and magic abilities
- Players seeking quests with consequences and changing world conditions
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a tightly linear adventure may find the reactive world and open-ended challenges diffuse
- Players who prefer simple character progression may find the large skill system demanding
- Players looking for a primarily social or cooperative RPG may not find that focus here
- Players wanting a short, single-purpose dungeon experience may find the multiple levels, quests and systems excessive
Our take on Underworld Ascendant
The flexible skill system and reactive dungeon trade fixed progression for experimentation. That gives players several ways to approach challenges, but also makes character planning and decision-making more involved than in a narrowly structured adventure.
What is Underworld Ascendant?
Underworld Ascendant takes place in the Stygian Abyss, a dangerous dungeon threatened by the beast Typhon.
Exploration includes the village of Marcaul, the Vault of Nyx and seven other large levels linked by rooms, passages, ruins and cavern complexes. Players combine more than 75 skills from Combat, Stealth and Magic archetypes to shape a character. The environment contains useful plants, physics-based traps and creatures whose abilities can be used during encounters.
More than 70 quests and side bounties support approaches such as avoiding detection or going unarmed. Factions compete for control, while decisions affect events and the surrounding world. Variable structures, enemy populations and world conditions create different situations across playthroughs, while rewards and skill unlocks come from solving challenges in varied ways.
