Our take on Umbraclaw
The bounce point arrives at the first-hit rule: Kuon dies from any damage, so players must manage each attempt rather than trade blows. The 9-life limit adds another wall for anyone who treats retries as unlimited practice.
What is Umbraclaw?
Umbraclaw follows Kuon, a house cat who wakes after death in the Soulplane, a realm inhabited by fallen souls.
The player guides her through a dangerous underworld while seeking a way to open the Boundary and return to her owner. Any hit kills Kuon, but Anima Revive brings her back with a skill gained by absorbing another animal’s soul. She can also take a humanoid form and has up to 9 revivals. The journey uses hand-drawn, paper-cutout-style artwork for its environments and enemies. Encounters with other souls and the player’s actions shape a multitude of possible endings, framing the search for home as a cycle of death and rebirth.
How Umbraclaw plays
- 01Limited Revivals
- Kuon can return from death up to 9 times, with each revival granting a new skill.
- 02Instant-Death Combat
- A single hit from the Soulplane’s hazards or enemies kills Kuon.
- 03Animal Soul Absorption
- Revival abilities come from absorbing the souls of other animals.
- 04Branching Endings
- Actions and choices during Kuon’s journey determine which of multiple endings unfolds.
- 05Humanoid Transformation
- Kuon can become stronger by changing into a humanoid form.
- 06Paper-Cutout Artwork
- The underworld and its enemies use hand-drawn artwork built around a paper-cutout visual style.
Umbraclaw compared to similar games
Umbraclaw centers on a single cat’s underworld journey, instant-death encounters, limited revivals, and choices that shape multiple endings. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania, while Jusant focuses on climbing, stamina management, exploration, and environmental puzzles rather than combat-driven rebirth.
