RPGIs The Pioneers: Surviving Desolation worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who enjoy managing small crews under environmental pressure
- Simulation fans interested in resource production, construction, and health monitoring
- Players who want replayable survival scenarios with changing crew combinations
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a fixed cast may bounce off the run-opening selection of three random specialists
- Players seeking low-pressure exploration may hit a wall when storms, sulfur winds, volcanic activity, and seismic events require constant response
- Players looking for a primarily narrative adventure may find the focus on resources, construction, health, and survival management too systems-heavy
Our take on The Pioneers: Surviving Desolation
The bounce point arrives when the initial three-person crew is generated and their strengths and weaknesses must shape the run. A second wall appears during expeditions, where sulfur winds and other hazards demand active beacon monitoring instead of relaxed resource gathering.
What is The Pioneers: Surviving Desolation?
Manage Io-1, an inhabited mission stranded on Jupiter’s moon after a spaceship wreck.
Begin with three randomly selected specialists from a pool of 15, then adapt to their different strengths and weaknesses. Reclaim ship parts to produce materials, construct station modules and engineering systems, create wearable gear, and prepare food. Monitor crew health while dealing with extreme temperatures, volcanic eruptions, seismic events, magnetic storms, and sulfur winds. Expeditions use a rover or flying drone to gather resources and scientific data across Io’s biomes. Multiple victory conditions and endings provide different objectives, while upgrades and repeated runs support learning and strategy development.
