- Players looking for a multiplayer tactics game; the described campaign centers on choosing a Lord and leading a party.
Our take on Successor
The store copy emphasizes a world that opens up as campaigns progress, but the core structure is repeated runs, with content unlocked for future attempts. Its focus is tactical battles and progression rather than a fixed narrative campaign.
What is Successor?
Successor is a tabletop-inspired tactics game set on miniature diorama battlefields.
Choose a Lord, gather heroes, and travel across a kingdom map, completing quests and fighting rulers. Battles run in real time, but can be paused while abilities are selected and used. Biomes offer tactical features such as archer towers, burnable fields, throwable axes, and wild animals. Each campaign is a fresh run, with procedurally generated challenges and selectable rulers. Victories and completed challenges unlock heroes, equipment, regions, factions, rulers, biomes, and items for future runs. Players can also set some adventure parameters and add Kickers, which change the rules of play.
How Successor plays
- 01Pause-and-plan combat
- Battles continue in real time between pauses, while the rest of the game stops as abilities are chosen and executed.
- 02Tactical terrain
- Battlefield features include archer towers, flammable ground, axes to throw, and wild animals.
- 03Procedural campaigns
- Runs generate challenges and let players choose rulers and adjust some adventure parameters.
- 04Unlockable content
- Quests, challenges, and ruler fights open access to additional heroes, gear, regions, factions, and battle settings.
