RPGIs Starsim worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Space RPG players who want both ship command and crew management
- Strategy players who enjoy switching between real-time and turn-based combat
- Players who prefer open-ended roles such as trader, scavenger, mercenary, or pirate
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a single, consistent combat system may find the shifts between paused ship combat and turn-based crew battles disruptive.
- Players who want a tightly bounded campaign may find the galaxy’s broad exploration and evolving world too open-ended.
- Players looking for a puzzle-focused or social multiplayer game
Our take on Starsim
The likely sticking point is the switch from pausable real-time ship combat to turn-based crew fights. Players who want one combat rhythm may hit that change as soon as they move between space and land encounters.
What is Starsim?
Starsim is a space strategy RPG that combines pausable real-time ship combat, turn-based crew battles, and text quests.
Players travel through a partly procedurally generated galaxy of star systems and planets, each with its own economy, government, and attitude toward the player. Missions can be selected while exploring planets and sectors, and the player’s choices can affect a branching storyline as the wider galaxy continues to change. Ship operations include managing the crew and modifying the vessel, as well as controlling weapons, engines, and shields. Combat takes place both in space and on land. Players can take on different roles, including trader, scavenger, mercenary, or pirate.
How Starsim plays
- 01Changing Galaxy
- Planets have distinct economies, governments, and opinions of the player, while the wider world evolves independently.
- 02Ship Operations
- Manage the crew, modify the vessel, and operate its weapons, engines, and shields.
- 03Mixed Combat
- Encounters include pausable real-time fights in space and turn-based battles involving the crew.
- 04Branching Story
- Player choices can shape the storyline while missions provide ways to act across the galaxy.
