Our take on Spaceship Commander
The defining structure is the combination of interstellar travel with landing on interactive planets divided into regions and locations, turning planets into explorable environments rather than backdrop scenery.
What is Spaceship Commander?
Spaceship Commander combines strategy, RPG, simulation, and roguelike elements across space travel and planetary exploration.
Begin at a space station, then travel through sectors and star systems by hypergate, encountering objects and events along the way. Land on interactive planets divided into regions and locations such as cities, military bases, forests, and deserts, each with environmental conditions including heat, cold, or low oxygen. Manage ships ranging from patrol vessels to frigates and cruisers, fitting weapons and internal modules while monitoring hull, energy, speed, and other parameters. Recruit and control crew members, either strategically or individually. Mine resources, trade, complete missions, fight enemies, find treasure, and develop ships, equipment, and crew from the station.
How Spaceship Commander plays
- 01Interactive Planet Landing
- Planets contain distinct regions and locations, including cities, bases, forests, and deserts, with different environmental conditions.
- 02Ship Class Selection
- Available vessels range from small patrol ships to frigates and cruisers, with varying weapon slots and module connections.
- 03Crew Control Modes
- Crew can be directed strategically or played individually through manual control.
- 04Resource-Based Progression
- Missions, enemy encounters, mining, trading, and treasure provide routes to upgrading equipment, ships, and crew.
- 05Ship Loss Consequences
- Travel can cost the ship, crew, and stored resources, while insurance allows a lost vessel to be reclaimed for part of its cost.
Spaceship Commander compared to similar games
SpaceBourne 2 also combines space travel, mining, trading, piracy, crafting, and exploration, but presents them as an open-universe RPG and third-person shooter focused on building an empire. Quasimorph is a high-stakes cosmic roguelike centered on corporate contracts and extracting gains from missions, while Spaceship Commander adds ship classes, crew control, planetary landings, and a persistent space station for ships and resources.
