Our take on Spinch
Rather than using a conventional platforming hero, Spinch makes an organism’s offspring part of the combat system. Its bright psychedelic presentation also replaces the genre’s usual visual language with cartoon artwork, while quick restarts remove lives and game-over screens.
What is Spinch?
Play as Spinch, a highly agile organism searching for its missing offspring across six colorful worlds.
The side-scrolling platformer combines dashing, dodging, climbing, swimming, jumping, and shooting with a ticking clock and rapid restarts; there are no lives or game overs. Six bosses guard the journey, and Spinch can fire its own babies as ammunition during these encounters. Levels contain multiple routes, bright environments, luminous stages, and demanding obstacles, while collectible items provide additional advantages. The game uses a retro visual style shaped by cartoonist Jesse Jacobs, with electronic music made using modified Gameboys and handmade circuit-bent instruments. Repeated section practice supports mastery of timing and reflexes, while speedrunning adds a further challenge.

- Six bosses can be attacked by launching Spinch’s offspring as projectiles.
- 04Quick restart structure
- A ticking clock and immediate retries replace lives and game-over screens.
- 05Speedrunning challenge

- 06Electronic soundtrack
- The music uses compositions made with modified Gameboys and handmade circuit-bent instruments.
Spinch compared to similar games
Spinch is a side-scrolling platformer built around precise movement, repeated section practice, six worlds, and six bosses. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is a chaotic metroidvania, so it centers on a broader metroidvania structure rather than Spinch’s timed movement challenges and quick-restart format.
