Our take on Sketch Crawler
The store page foregrounds endless procedural play and creative drawing, but the game is also presented as an ongoing experiment. Several ideas, including voiceovers and broader user-created content, are framed as planned experimentation rather than established core systems.
What is Sketch Crawler?
Sketch Crawler is a roguelike deckbuilding RPG set in a cartoon fantasy world where drawing functions as magic.
Players explore procedurally generated dungeons and face enemies in turn-based card battles, building a deck from cards they find. Objects such as creatures, spells, walls, furniture, and decorations can be redrawn, with drawings saved for later world generations. Colors can add abilities to creatures and strengthen spells. Players can also redraw cards to give them different properties and draw creatures that fight on their behalf. Combat does not require killing every enemy: allowing an enemy to escape leaves loot and experience unchanged. The game also presents voice recording and custom quest or dialogue text as creative features.
How Sketch Crawler plays
- 01Redrawn World Objects
- Player-made drawings can replace creatures, spells, walls, furniture, and decorative elements in later generated worlds.
- 02Color-Based Powers
- Adding colors to creatures grants abilities, while coloring spells increases their effects.
- 03Turn-Based Card Combat
- Dungeon encounters use cards, with decks assembled from cards discovered during play.
- 04Custom Card Properties
- Found cards can be redrawn to change what they do.
- 05Summoned Drawings
- Drawn creatures can enter battles and fight for the player.
- 06Nonlethal Encounters
- Enemies may be allowed to escape without changing the amount of loot or experience received.
