Is Fogpiercer worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want turn-based battles built around positioning and enemy movement
- Deckbuilder fans who enjoy changing their starting cards through train configuration
- Roguelike players who want branching routes and unlocks across repeated runs
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want relaxed combat may hit a wall when limited action points and enemy numbers demand careful planning each turn
- Players seeking a fixed campaign may bounce off the run-based structure, route variation, and choices that reset between expeditions
- Players looking for real-time battles may not fit its turn-based tactical format
Our take on Fogpiercer
The bounce point arrives when battles combine limited action points with enemies that surround and outnumber the train. Players must account for movement, telegraphed attacks, terrain, and card order; improvised turns can quickly leave too few actions for a safe response.
What is Fogpiercer?
Fogpiercer is a science-fiction roguelike deckbuilder centered on a train expedition.
The chosen locomotive, carriages, and driver determine the starting cards and available options for each run. Players select routes through branching regions, gather scrap and other resources, repair or modify the train, and fight bandits and their leaders. Battles use limited action points, environmental hazards, enemy movement, and interactions such as pushing vehicles, causing collisions, or turning opponents against one another. More than 170 cards provide attacks, support effects, status effects, and other tools. Random encounters, boss fights, region modifiers, and metaprogression add variation between runs, with additional locomotives, drivers, carriages, and cards becoming available over time.
How Fogpiercer plays
- 01Train-Based Deckbuilding
- Locomotives, carriages, and drivers each change the cards available at the beginning of a run.
- 02Environmental Combat
- Battlefields include hazards such as cliffs and tracks that can damage or reposition enemies.
- 03Branching Routes
- Regional maps offer alternate nodes, modifiers, rewards, battlefields, and repair stops.
- 04Train Customization
- Resources can fund repairs, upgrades, and purchases or sales of carriages during a journey.
- 05Persistent Unlocks
- Between-run progress opens additional locomotives, drivers, carriages, and cards.
Fogpiercer compared to similar games
Fogpiercer combines deck construction with train customization, environmental hazards, and branching expeditions. Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based roguelike deckbuilding, but its description focuses on attack tiles, skill combinations, and positioning before a confrontation with the Shogun rather than train-mounted battles and vehicle manipulation.
