RPGIs Skautfold: Usurper worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Metroidvania fans who want connected areas, shortcuts, and secrets to explore
- Action RPG players who enjoy timing-based defense and varied character builds
- Players seeking optional challenge modes and bosses beyond the main exploration
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players looking for a linear structure rather than an interconnected world with shortcuts and additional areas
- Players who prefer combat without timing-based defense, since dodging and Guard management are central to the battle system
- Players seeking a standalone story with no connection to a game series, even though prior knowledge of the first game is not required
Our take on Skautfold: Usurper
Rather than treating a hit as immediate health loss, the combat uses Guard points that can be replenished in part through well-timed dodges. This makes defensive timing part of the attack-and-defense loop, while optional modes such as 1 HP and permadeath let players alter the challenge.
What is Skautfold: Usurper?
Skautfold: Usurper is a Metroidvania action RPG set in an alternate 1898 London, where a landed Citadel has unleashed horrors and a maddening Fog.
Explore its interconnected areas, find shortcuts and hidden locations, and fight enemies with a Guard system: hits consume Guard points, while well-timed dodges convert some incoming damage into Guard. A reflective shield can send many enemy projectiles back at them. Character progression includes eight stats that can be reassigned, plus more than 90 weapons and spells. Optional bosses and special modes include no-Guard, 1 HP, permadeath, and a speedrunning mode. The game is a sequel to Shrouded in Sanity, but prior knowledge of that game is not required.
How Skautfold: Usurper plays
- 01Timing-based Guard
- Dodging through attacks can turn part of their damage into Guard points, while hits spend those points before health is affected.
- 02Reflective shield
- The shield can redirect most enemy projectiles toward their attackers, at a reduced Guard cost.
- 03Reassignable stats
- Eight character stats can be redistributed to support different builds.
- 04Optional challenge modes
- Players can activate no-Guard, 1 HP, permadeath, or built-in speedrunning modes.
- 05Interconnected areas
- The Citadel connects varied locations through paths and shortcuts, with secrets and optional bosses to find.
