Our take on Shadwen
Its focus on concealment, setup, and indirect kills limits the role of direct combat. The rewind mechanic allows experimentation, but it also makes progress depend on testing actions and revisiting earlier decisions rather than committing to a single approach.
What is Shadwen?
Shadwen is a third-person stealth-action game about an assassin trying to kill a king while protecting Lily, an orphaned girl who follows her.
Guards react to suspicious sights and sounds, so movement, attacks, and indirect eliminations must be planned around remaining unseen. Shadwen can traverse rooftops and ceilings with a rope, use shadows for concealment, and manipulate objects to create accidental-looking deaths. Time pauses while she stands still and can be rewound to alter earlier actions. Players can also prepare hazards such as poison devices, spikes, and decoys to distract or eliminate guards. Lily’s presence adds a choice between using violence in front of her and finding another way while keeping Shadwen’s purpose secret.
How Shadwen plays
- 01Rewindable Time
- Time can pause during stationary moments, allowing earlier movements and decisions to be changed.
- 02Physics-Based Eliminations
- A freely placed rope can pull down objects and use gravity to create indirect deaths.
- 03Crafted Hazards
- Poison devices, spike mechanisms, decoys, and other crafted items can lure or distract guards.
- 04Rope Traversal
- The rope provides routes to rooftops and controlled drops from overhead positions.
- 05Lily Escort
- Shadwen must protect Lily while choosing whether to use violence in the girl’s view.
