Our take on Shadow of Valhalla
Its emphasis on VR combat narrows the experience around fighting, weapons, and magic. That focus leaves less room for the broader exploration, social systems, or varied noncombat activities associated with larger role-playing games.
What is Shadow of Valhalla?
Shadow of Valhalla is a VR combat game built around physics-based fighting in a supernatural setting inspired by Viking traditions.
Players face hostile forces, find magical runes, and gain spells. Battles use responsive enemy AI and physics-driven weapon interactions, with extreme gore. The Early Access version starts with Endless Horde Mode, where enemy variety and rising difficulty shape repeated runs. Other current elements include story-based player choices, RPG quests, weapon forging and crafting, mixed-reality tools, and support for haptic accessories. The developer plans to add enemies, environments, spells, and quests. The controls take inspiration from Half-Life: Alyx.
