Our take on Road Defense: Outsiders
The description emphasizes escalating power through temporary boosts and permanent upgrades, but each match still ends in defeat. Its loop is built around spending earnings and carrying skill improvements into the next attempt, rather than describing a campaign or a final victory.
What is Road Defense: Outsiders?
Road Defense: Outsiders combines roguelike progression with tower defense.
During a run, drivers who reach the end of the road pay a fee, which can be spent on new tower weapons or upgrades for installed weapons. Enemies can drop orbs that fill an experience bar. Each level-up lets players temporarily improve their skills, and killing more enemies in a wave yields more orbs. A run ends when the player is killed. The number of enemies defeated during that match is then converted into money for permanent skill improvements, so the next match starts with those upgrades in place.
How Road Defense: Outsiders plays
- 01Tower weapon upgrades
- Fees paid by drivers reaching the road's end can buy new weapons or improve installed ones.
- 02Temporary skill boosts
- Enemy drops fill an experience meter, with each level granting a temporary skill improvement.
- 03Permanent progression
- After a match ends, its enemy-kill total becomes money for permanent skill upgrades.
Road Defense: Outsiders compared to similar games
Anomaly: Warzone Earth also combines action and strategy with tower defense, but it uses a reversed tower-defense formula and centers on fighting an alien invasion. Road Defense: Outsiders instead focuses on defending a road, buying tower weapons with driver fees, and turning enemy kills into temporary and permanent skill progression.
