Our take on River City Girls Zero
The likely bounce point arrives when repeated punches, kicks, grabs, and stage-based encounters stop providing enough variation. Players expecting extensive character development may hit a wall at the focused arcade structure rather than the added story and presentation material.
What is River City Girls Zero?
River City Girls Zero is a 16-bit beat-'em-up based on a 1994 game, newly translated and released outside Japan after 28 years.
Players follow Kunio, Riki, Misako, and Kyoko as they attempt to clear their names by fighting criminals across locations such as a high school, docks, amusement park, casino, jailhouse, carnival, and highway. Each of the four playable characters has unique special moves. Combat includes punches, kicks, jump attacks, grabs, and other techniques. The game supports one player or two-player local co-op, with motorcycle stages presented in a Mode 7-style format. Added material includes motion-comic cutscenes, an animated intro, new music, and an image gallery containing vintage box art, manual images, and other content.
