Our take on Perennial Order
The focus on boss encounters keeps the design concentrated, but it leaves less room for broader RPG systems, extended exploration, or varied activities between fights. One-hit death also makes each combat decision carry a high cost, with limited tolerance for mistakes.
What is Perennial Order?
Perennial Order is a 2D plant-horror boss rush set in a Dark Age world overtaken by nature-infested horrors.
Players explore a mysterious land, meet unusual NPCs, uncover its story, and face bosses with different mechanics. Combat uses twin-stick melee controls and one-hit death, with respawns returning directly to the start of an encounter. The game supports solo play as well as two-player local and online co-op from beginning to end. Its painterly 2D presentation combines realistic techniques with 2D Spine animation, while sounds and boss-specific musical themes shape the atmosphere. The interface is minimal, keeping the screen clear during exploration and combat.
How Perennial Order plays
- 01One-Hit Combat
- A single hit causes death, followed by a direct return to the current encounter's beginning.
- 02Twin-Stick Melee
- Fights use twin-stick controls for close-range attacks against each boss.
- 03Two-Player Co-op
- The full adventure supports both local and online play with one other person.
- 04Boss Variety
- Boss encounters use different mechanics and require adaptation from one fight to the next.
- 05Unusual NPCs
- Characters encountered during exploration provide ways to uncover more about the mysterious world.
