Our take on Nauticrawl
The focus on learning one unfamiliar machine gives the game a concentrated structure, but it also limits variety in how progression is experienced. Much of the challenge comes from interpreting controls, systems, and consequences rather than from a wide range of activities.
What is Nauticrawl?
Nauticrawl is an atmospheric adventure about escaping a hostile planet in a stolen machine built for ruling elites.
Players operate its consoles by checking radar, adjusting controls, redirecting power, hacking devices, and uncovering communications. The machine’s systems must be understood through experimentation, with mistakes and failed attempts forming part of the learning process. Pursuing forces and the planet’s atmosphere create pressure during the escape. Gameplay uses turn-based exploration, and each run begins again while knowledge from earlier attempts carries forward. Progress comes from working out how the Nauticrawl’s controls and devices connect, then applying that understanding to a new escape attempt.
How Nauticrawl plays
- 01Turn-based exploration
- Each escape attempt unfolds through discrete exploration turns while the machine’s systems are worked out.
- 02Machine experimentation
- Levers, knobs, buttons, power routing, and hacks provide different ways to investigate the vehicle.
- 03Persistent knowledge
- New runs restart the attempt but retain what was learned during earlier failures.
- 04Console puzzles
- Progress depends on discovering how the Nauticrawl’s controls and devices work together.
