Moonrise Fall centers on a boy caught in an uncanny woodland following a car accident that killed his parents.
The game mixes exploration, investigation, collecting, and puzzles. A journal offers clues, and a camera lets players document cryptids encountered in the woods. Areas such as caves, mines, a lumber mill, and surreal locations can be visited at an individual pace. Puzzles include translating a cipher and revealing concealed messages. Players can perform tunes on a kalimba to bring on effects such as rain or wind. The setting shifts through five periods of the day, and its music changes in layers. The world also contains Easter eggs and a gallery of creature photographs.
