Our take on Martha Is Dead
Rather than treating wartime history as a distant backdrop, the game places a personal murder mystery inside it and filters events through folklore, superstition, photography, and puppet theatre. Its investigation replaces a conventional action structure with fragmented memories and psychological unease.
What is Martha Is Dead?
Set in 1944 Italy, this first-person psychological thriller follows Giulia, the daughter of a German soldier, after the murder of her twin sister Martha.
Players investigate the death while navigating grief, wartime upheaval, folklore, superstition, and hidden memories. The Tuscan countryside can be explored on foot, by boat, or by bicycle. Puppet-theatre sequences reveal repressed experiences, while symbols and tarot cards expose further elements of the mystery. Players can collect newspapers and telegrams, listen to wartime radio broadcasts, and take photographs. An in-game photography system includes film development in a working darkroom. Italian voice acting and music connected to the period support the narrative setting.
