Our take on Hero Generations: ReGen
The lifespan mechanic gives every move strategic weight, but it limits experimentation within a single hero’s life. Progress depends on succession, so players seeking open-ended control of one character give up that continuity.
What is Hero Generations: ReGen?
Hero Generations: ReGen combines roguelike play with 4X strategy, treating every turn as a year in a hero’s lifetime.
Travel across a procedurally created world, form a partnership, establish a dwelling, and have a child before death. The next generation takes over in the unchanged world, carrying inherited traits into future play. Nineteen permanent structures can be placed near towns, granting resources, abilities, and varied partner choices. Six environments—Forest, Desert, Meadow, Island, Swamp, and Volcano—shape the world. Players can pursue victory through Strength, Love, Exploration, Wealth, Fame, or Building. Additional systems include research technology, quests, foes, generational occurrences, an endgame, a final boss, achievements, internet leaderboards, and a 36-page PDF art book.
How Hero Generations: ReGen plays

- 05End-game content
- Quests, generational events, a final boss, achievements, and online leaderboards extend the available campaign content.
Hero Generations: ReGen compared to similar games
Old World also combines strategy, empire building, marriage, heirs, and legacy across generations, while Hero Generations centers its systems on an individual hero’s yearly life cycle. Old World focuses on leading an empire through historical eras; Hero Generations uses exploration, town construction, six victory paths, and procedurally generated biomes.
