Our take on Farlanders
The placement-based terraforming system rewards careful planning, but preset tile shapes can restrict where a change works as intended. Choosing a tile and using a turn to apply it means terrain edits are strategic decisions rather than unrestricted map sculpting.
What is Farlanders?
Farlanders is a turn-based city builder about establishing a colony on Mars.
Build housing and resource-producing facilities, including water pumps, farms, solar power and mines, while planning where each structure goes: nearby terrain can change its output. Use a turn to apply terraforming tiles and reshape the land, creating fertile areas or mineral deposits, but tile shapes and placement can lead to different results. When surface space or resources run short, dig underground to expand, find artifacts and collect rare minerals. The game also includes research into alien artifacts and the discovery of secrets on the planet. Maps, terraforming patterns, trade proposals and weather conditions vary between playthroughs.
How Farlanders plays
- 01Placement bonuses
- A building's position can affect its output, such as a wind turbine generating more electricity near mountains.
- 02Underground expansion
- Dig below the surface to open new building areas, find artifacts and access rare minerals.
- 03Variable playthroughs
- New maps, terraforming patterns, trade proposals and weather conditions are generated for each run.
