Our take on Dead Monarchy
The game trades accessibility for demanding combat and company management. Permanent losses and captain death make setbacks costly, while the range of build choices calls for planning. Its stated recommendation is to learn the mechanics at default difficulty before attempting the harder Emperor setting.
What is Dead Monarchy?
Lead a medieval mercenary company across the Midlands, an open-world low-fantasy region with havens, caves, ruins, graveyards, and abandoned fortresses.
Travel brings random events and opportunities to accept contracts, recruit fighters, resupply, trade, craft equipment, or pursue the quest to defeat the arena champions. Tactical battles use turn-based positioning, elevation, flanking, counterattacks, ranged attacks, and attacks of opportunity, with up to 18 mercenaries in combat. The game includes 10 opposing factions, 10 weapon types, over 100 weapon models, 200 equipment pieces, and 180 perks and abilities. The captain's death ends the game, and mercenary deaths are permanent. Manual saving and ironman mode are available.
