Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a traditional chess match without real-time battles will hit the fight trigger whenever one piece attacks another.
- Players who prefer relaxed, turn-based pacing may bounce off the need to manage board decisions alongside fast combat execution.
- Solo players looking for a single-player campaign will not find that mode described here.
- Players who want a fighting game without chess positioning will have to account for piece placement and movement range.
Our take on Checkmate Showdown
The bounce point arrives when a board attack becomes an active fight: players must shift from positioning pieces to executing combos, defensive options, and special moves. Chess-focused players may reach the opponent’s King quickly but still face a separate combat skill check with the attacking piece.
What is Checkmate Showdown?
Checkmate Showdown combines chess with real-time fighting-game combat in online multiplayer matches.
Players position chess pieces, and an attack triggers a fight between the selected pieces. Nearby pieces can provide tag assists, while the attacker begins with an Ultimate available. Each piece corresponds to a fighter with a distinct style and chess ability, including archetypes such as zoners, grapplers, and rushdown characters. Matches require board placement, tactical decisions, combo execution, special moves, cancels, defensive options, and knowledge of each piece’s abilities. The game uses rollback netcode and supports both newcomers and experienced fighting-game players through an approachable control scheme with competitive depth.
