Our take on Back Rank Chess
The sharpest wall comes at the loss condition: one pawn reaching the back rank ends the attempt, so players who expect room to recover from a missed defense may bounce off quickly. Expert stages are also singled out as especially demanding, making the highest difficulty a likely sticking point.
What is Back Rank Chess?
Back Rank Chess is a chess variant in which enemy pawns advance toward the back rank.
Capture all of them before any pawn reaches that rank; a single pawn making contact means defeat. The pawns are controlled by a chess engine, so their moves can challenge the player. The game has three difficulty settings: Beginner, Amateur, and Expert. Its 66 stages are individually titled and arranged as distinct challenges. The setup focuses on defending the back rank rather than a standard chess match, with the objective centered on stopping the approaching pawns.
