Our take on ASCENXION
Rather than keeping shoot ’em up combat in a sequence of battles, ASCENXION ties progression to exploration and access to new areas. It also shifts the combat emphasis from continuous dodging and firing toward terrain, resource sharing, and changing skill choices.
What is ASCENXION?
ASCENXION is a 2D shoot ’em up set among the remnants of human civilization after a catastrophic explosion.
Exploration opens new areas through skills and items, while the journey includes puzzles, traps, elite enemies, and boss fights. Combat emphasizes choices and focus rather than relying only on dodging projectiles and firing. Terrain can provide cover, basic attacks slow movement, and attack and evasion skills draw on shared resources. Players use attacks, skills, and item effects against enemies.
Exploration yields rune stones that combine weapons with effects, along with items that grant lasting effects or experience bonuses. Each aircraft has four skills; later skills unlock after boss defeats. One of two skills can be selected for each stage and changed as situations shift. An event can also unlock altered skills and stats for each aircraft.
How ASCENXION plays
- 01Exploration unlocks
- Finding skills and items opens access to additional areas.
- 02Tactical combat
- Terrain cover, slower movement during basic attacks, and shared attack-and-evasion resources shape combat choices.
- 03Weapon rune stones
- These items combine weapons with effects, while other pickups grant lasting effects or experience bonuses.
- 04Stage skill choices
- Choose one of two skills for a stage, then switch the selection as terrain or enemies call for a different approach.
- 05Aircraft development
- Each aircraft has four skills, with later ones unlocked by defeating bosses; an event can also alter its skills and stats.
ASCENXION compared to similar games
ASCENXION combines shoot ’em up combat with skill-and-item-based area unlocking, while Jusant centers on climbing tools, stamina, and exploring routes up a tower. Sundered®: Eldritch Edition is also identified as a Metroidvania, but its supplied description does not provide enough detail to compare its mechanics with ASCENXION.
