The turn-based star map covers colony management, fleet deployment, research, exploration, diplomacy and trade. Players can form alliances, make pacts, issue threats or request favours, then turn to real-time 3D space combat. Exploration may reveal storms, psychic plants, primitive societies or abandoned technology. Commodities such as relics, minerals, tourists and antimatter can be traded between the player's worlds and alien worlds. The game includes espionage, special operations, more than 150 technologies, a map designer, adjustable map size and player counts, LAN or PBEM multiplayer, and the Supernova expansion. Its focus is on battles and strategy rather than detailed economic management.
