Our take on Yawnoc
Rather than treating enemies as fixed target patterns, the game makes cellular-automaton rules part of combat. Machine behavior changes across forest areas, replacing a standard shooter progression with encounters built around learning and adapting to different systems.
What is Yawnoc?
Yawnoc is a chaotic top-down shooter roguelite set in a forest invaded by strange machines.
Combat revolves around enemies governed by cellular-automaton rules, including Conway's Game of Life, Brian's Brain, and LowDeath. Different areas introduce changing rulesets that alter machine behavior. Players use weapons, abilities, and upgrades to clear the forest, with more than 50 upgrades available. Weapons have distinct behaviors and abilities suited to different combat approaches. Permanent enchantments remain between runs and can be improved, with thousands of possible combinations that alter weapon effects. Forest residents can also join the fight and add firepower. The game combines run-based progression with enemy patterns that require learning how each automaton behaves.
How Yawnoc plays
- 01Automaton-Based Enemies
- Machine behavior follows several named cellular-automaton systems, with new rule sets appearing as the forest progresses.
- 02Weapon Customization
- More than 50 upgrades and weapon-specific abilities support different combat approaches.
- 03Persistent Enchantments
- Weapon enchantments carry across runs and can be improved through thousands of possible combinations.
- 04Local Allies
- Forest inhabitants can join the battles and increase the player's firepower.
