Our take on Xi
The focus on a compact mansion mystery gives the game a concentrated setting, but it also limits the sense of travel and world variety found in broader role-playing adventures.
What is Xi?
Xi is a horror puzzle RPG set in a mountain mansion abandoned after the early Republic of China era.
Drawing on modern Chinese folklore, it places the player among unsettling scenes such as an empty banquet and a seemingly endless passage. The story follows a visitor who enters the haunted house and encounters figures whose identities and motives are uncertain. Its neo-Chinese pixel-art presentation supports an escape-room structure focused on exploration, puzzles, and uncovering a vanished past.
Characters have individual agendas, while the central mystery involves a ghost bride, a purchased girl, and the question of who truly needs saving. The game includes four endings, including one designated as the true ending, and uses Eastern mysticism rather than conventional jump scares.
How Xi plays
- 01Four Story Endings
- One of the four available conclusions is identified as the official true ending.
- 02Character Agendas
- Each character pursues a separate motive that can reveal further information about the mansion.
- 03Pixel-Art Mansion
- The setting uses a neo-Chinese pixel-art style linked to a wealthy family from the early Republic of China era.
- 04Folklore Horror
- The mystery draws on modern Chinese folklore and Eastern mysticism instead of relying on standard jump scares.
Xi compared to similar games
Xi centers on horror puzzles, a haunted mansion, and four possible endings, while Angels of Death is an RPG Maker spin-off and Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition focuses on an unconventional story, characters, and exploration of a dangerous city. Back to the Dawn uses prison escape, investigation, survival, and hidden agendas, whereas Ghost of a Tale combines action-RPG play with stealth, disguises, conversations, and exploration in an animal-populated medieval world.
