Our take on 99 Spirits
The focus on spirit identification, captured abilities, and branching outcomes gives the adventure a specialized structure, but leaves less room for a straightforward combat-first RPG experience.
What is 99 Spirits?
In medieval Japan, Hanabusa seeks revenge after evil spirits kill her mother.
A sword inherited from her mother lets her perceive spirits’ real forms, but a figure claiming to be her father breaks it. Hanabusa must repair the weapon, investigate her father’s identity, and destroy the spirits she encounters. Battles involve determining each enemy’s true identity. Defeated spirits can be captured, their skills learned, and their abilities used to solve puzzles outside combat. The journey includes interactions with more than 40 characters and fights against over 100 monsters. Player actions lead to different endings. The game includes English and Japanese voice options, plus the original Japanese version, Tsukumogami, as a separate Steam Library item.

99 Spirits compared to similar games

Back to the Dawn focuses on investigating, surviving, and escaping a prison, whereas 99 Spirits follows a revenge journey through a folklore-based medieval Japan.
