Blood Metal upgrades weapons and add-ons, while pickups improve weapons during stages. The game uses lives instead of a health bar: enemy hits can downgrade weapons, and extra lives come from score milestones or Blood of Valfaris. Defeating enemies and destroying objects adds to the score, while destroyed checkpoints can provide Blood of Valfaris. Challenge Mode becomes available after completing the game once.
