Our take on Unterholz
Its defining structure is a short, nonlinear investigation in a compact semi-open medieval swamp, with the central mystery revealed mainly through environmental details rather than a linear sequence of scenes.
What is Unterholz?
Unterholz is a short atmospheric adventure set in an alternate late-15th-century Pomerania.
Players explore a compact semi-open world containing a dark swamp, abandoned ruins, and an isolated enclave while investigating the disappearance of its inhabitants. Progress is non-linear, with the story revealed mainly through environmental details, documents, conversations, and exploration. The game includes several sword-fighting encounters and a few puzzles. Inventory checks, reading, and movement take place without separate menu or loading-screen interruptions. Fully voiced characters provide dialogue, while composed music and placed sound effects accompany the journey. Medieval documents can be examined from every side, and the game combines historical references with elements from different periods.
