Our take on Umbra
Its survival focus makes movement and visibility resources part of navigation, but that also narrows play around conserving stamina and flashlight power rather than a wider set of systems.
What is Umbra?
Umbra is a first-person survival-horror game in which Jesse Miller searches for a way out of a threatening place.
The story follows Jesse through gloomy events as two pursuers, Amon Morgan and Blair Cunningham, try to stop the escape. Progress involves completing multiple objectives while watching stamina, since running can exhaust it, and finding batteries to keep the flashlight lit. Sound effects can provide clues, and peeking around corners is part of navigating the environment. The game combines free-roam exploration with hostile encounters and a soundtrack described as gloomy.
How Umbra plays
- 01Stamina management
- Running without need can drain stamina, so movement has a resource cost.
- 02Flashlight batteries
- The flashlight has limited power, and batteries can be found during play.
- 03Environmental sound cues
- Audio effects may reveal useful information while exploring.
- 04Multiple objectives
- Objectives vary in challenge as Jesse searches for an exit.
