Is The Troma Project worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Troma fans who want a strategy game built around its characters and film style
- Turn-based strategy players who prefer deliberately offensive horror-comedy settings
- Players interested in early-2000s PC game oddities with cinematic presentation
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a serious or realistic strategy campaign may find the crude, exaggerated subject matter unsuitable.
- Players who want a tightly focused tactical system may not enjoy the mix of combat, inventory meddling, drink mixing, shooting, and environmental destruction.
- Players looking for modern military strategy may prefer a game centered on large-scale World War II combat, such as Men of War: Assault Squad.
- Players seeking deck-building or upgrade-focused turn-based combat may prefer Shogun Showdown.
Our take on The Troma Project
Its defining format is a seven-chapter turn-based strategy campaign presented alongside full-screen Troma movie cutscenes, combining mission play with the tone and material of an unruly cult-film archive.
What is The Troma Project?
The Troma Project is a turn-based strategy game originally completed in 2001 and released later.
It follows The Toxic Avenger and Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD through seven chapters spanning Tromaville, Arabia, Motumbuland, and other locations. Missions combine combat with inventory manipulation, drink mixing, target shooting, car destruction, and the collection of weapons, drugs, drinks, and other items. Lloyd Kaufman provides advice at the start of each mission. The story is presented through full-screen movie cutscenes containing swearing, sex, crime, splatter horror, blood, and gore. The package also includes more than 25 music tracks and selected extras from the original PC CD-ROM release. The game’s setting features Surf-Nazis, toxic waste, mutant violence, and a devil-worshipping mega-conglomerate.

The Troma Project compared to similar games
Men of War: Assault Squad focuses on large-scale World War II operations with direct control of combat units, while The Troma Project combines turn-based missions with inventory experiments, environmental destruction, and film cutscenes. Shogun Showdown centers on positioning, attack tiles, combos, skills, deck building, and roguelike progression; The Troma Project instead uses a seven-chapter campaign with Troma characters, collected items, and cinematic sequences. Xenonauts covers Cold War-era alien defense through persistent soldiers, squad operations, and technology recovery, unlike The Troma Project's trash-cinema setting and mission structure.
