We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Simulation players who want to create organisms rather than manage a preset ecosystem
- Players who prefer guided tasks over an entirely open sandbox
- Sandbox builders interested in observing ecological changes over time
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fast-paced game rather than a short ecosystem simulation
- Players who want a fixed, authored progression instead of organism design and changing ecosystems
- Players looking for a combat-focused or story-driven game
Our take on The Sapling
Instead of centering a simulation on managing a fixed world, The Sapling lets players design the organisms themselves and watch the ecosystem change. Its scenario tasks provide a guided route into the systems, while sandbox mode shifts toward open-ended planet building and mutation.
What is The Sapling?
The Sapling is a short simulation game about creating plants and animals and placing them together in a world.
Customize algae and plants, and build aquatic, land, or flying animals with different traits. Scenario mode introduces simulation concepts in stages, with each task setting requirements for the ecosystem. Sandbox mode opens the same tools and adds a procedural planet generator, where worlds can be shaped as deserts or underwater environments. It supports up to 8 seasons, and changes can be made during play. Random mutations can also be enabled, letting species change over time as they compete for available ecological niches.
How The Sapling plays
- 01Custom organisms
- Plants and animals can be given traits such as glowing flowers, burrowing egg-layers, and underwater-diving predators.
- 02Scenario tasks
- Each scenario sets ecosystem requirements while introducing a small set of simulation concepts.
- 03Planet sandbox
- A procedural generator can create worlds such as deserts and underwater environments, with up to 8 seasons.
- 04Random mutations
- Enabling mutations lets species change and compete for niches as the ecosystem develops.
