Is Surviving the Abyss worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want to manage a resource-dependent underwater colony
- Simulation fans interested in life support, infrastructure, and crew management
- Players who enjoy science-fiction research alongside environmental threats
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a forgiving colony builder may hit a wall when oxygen, power, food, life support, or lighting systems fail.
- Players wanting a relaxed base-building pace may bounce off the constant pressure from crew survival and threats in the darkness.
- Players looking for direct squad combat may find the facility-management structure too indirect.
Our take on Surviving the Abyss
The bounce point arrives when several survival systems must be maintained at once. Players who can manage construction but dislike monitoring oxygen, power, food, life support, and light may stall before expansion and research can develop.
What is Surviving the Abyss?
Set in 1976 during the Cold War, this strategy simulation puts a deep-sea research facility under the player’s direction.
Construct and expand a colony while maintaining oxygen, power, food, lighting, and other life-support needs. Mine resources, connect buildings with tunnels and power lines, and use vertical construction across the uneven ocean floor. Research advanced technologies, conduct genetic experiments on local wildlife, and work toward human cloning. Crew members must remain sane, obedient, and alive as the facility grows. Exploration submarines and outposts extend access to distant resources. An event system introduces decisions, while darkness conceals threats that light can hold back.
How Surviving the Abyss plays
- 01Colony life support
- Oxygen, electricity, food, illumination, and other systems must be maintained to keep the crew alive.
- 02Undersea construction
- Buildings and mining sites are linked with tunnels and power lines across irregular seabed terrain.
- 03Genetic research
- Scientists study local wildlife and pursue cloning research through facility development and technology research.
- 04Remote resource gathering
- Submersibles and outposts provide access to materials located away from the main base.
- 05Darkness threats
- Light pylons extend the colony’s safe area while dangers remain in unlit surroundings.
- 06Crew decisions
- An event system presents choices that affect the facility and its population.
Surviving the Abyss compared to similar games
