Our take on Destination Ares
The design trades character growth for a steady loss of capability: the ship deteriorates rather than becoming stronger, so repeated play centers on learning how to manage decline rather than building power.
What is Destination Ares?
Destination Ares casts the player as the artificial intelligence of a colony ship assembled from worn parts and traveling to Mars.
Players design the ship, directly control its systems, set alarms to get the crew’s attention, and respond to emergencies. Resources are limited, and the ship loses power and capability over time. Each run takes less than half an hour, while mastery can take hours. The difficulty remains hard, and success depends on playing smarter rather than becoming stronger. Hidden branching story arcs lead to several endings. There are no aliens or guns; the journey centers on failing systems, an incompetent crew, and the struggle to keep everyone alive.
