Our take on Ruinarch
The defining mechanic is indirect control: the player creates conditions, relationships, diseases, and supernatural threats, then watches villagers and settlements react.
What is Ruinarch?
Ruinarch is a sandbox simulation in which an evil overlord creates conflicts and disasters in procedurally generated fantasy worlds.
Three overlord archetypes offer different approaches, from direct destruction to manipulating villagers behind the scenes. Spells can interact with environmental elements, while custom plagues gain symptoms, virulence, and other effects. Villagers can be changed into vampires, werewolves, zombies, or cultists, and monsters can be captured, bred, and sent to raid settlements. Information gathered through Beholder structures can fuel gossip between villagers. The game also supports village-scale disasters, including vampire hunts, werewolf hunts, and zombie outbreaks, with the player able to begin again after wiping out a settlement.
How Ruinarch plays
- 01Three Overlord Archetypes
- Each archetype supports a different approach to causing destruction or manipulating villagers.
- 02Reactive Spell Combinations
- Elemental effects can interact, such as a meteor striking a poisonous puddle to produce a poisonous explosion.
- 03Custom Plague Creation
- A Biolab lets the player add symptoms, increase virulence, and make infected victims explode when they die.
- 04Monster Breeding
- Captured monsters can be bred for specific functions before being sent to seize villagers or raid villages.
- 05Village Manipulation
- Villagers can be afflicted with conditions such as lycanthropy or unfaithfulness to trigger conflicts between them.
- 06Cultist Infiltration
- Captured villagers can be imprisoned and brainwashed into secretly worshipping the player.
