Our take on Red Rover
The focus on unstructured exploration leaves out conventional game goals: there are no missions, score targets, or stated progression systems. Its fixed set of nine curated areas also limits geographic variety, trading breadth and objectives for a focused Mars-driving experience.
What is Red Rover?
Red Rover is a Mars driving simulator built from satellite and terrain information captured by NASA’s HiRISE Mars orbiter.
It presents nine selected Mars datasets, each roughly 5 km by 5 km, as areas to drive through and explore. The game has no missions or score targets, focusing instead on open-ended traversal. It runs on PC in standard non-VR mode and supports Oculus Rift for virtual reality play. The project recreates terrain from the real planet using the available data, while its scope is limited to the included curated areas. The vendor says additional maps may be added as time allows and as new satellite data becomes available.
