Our take on Recompile
The bounce point arrives at the Mainframe’s logic circuitry: players who do not enjoy tracing, reversing, and exploiting connected systems may stall when doors, forcefields, elevators, or enemy-spawning mechanisms become puzzle elements rather than simple obstacles.
What is Recompile?
Recompile is a 3D Metroidvania adventure set inside the ruins of a digital Mainframe.
Players control a semi-sapient program facing deletion while exploring non-linear areas, fighting hostile inhabitants, and gaining traversal abilities. Environmental systems such as doors, forcefields, elevators, and enemy-spawning mechanisms operate through connected logic circuitry that can be altered, including by reversing gate states. The game combines platforming, combat, hacking, exploration, and narrative discovery. Actions can repair systems, restore data, alter enemies, or destroy them, leading to multiple endings. Its story unfolds within one second of real time and examines machine sentience, choice, intelligence, and the Mainframe’s original purpose.
How Recompile plays
- 01Systemic Logic Puzzles
- Players can alter connected gate circuits controlling environmental obstacles and other Mainframe systems.
- 02Multiple Endings
- Choices involving repairs, data recovery, hacking, and destruction affect the game’s outcomes.
- 03Traversal Abilities
- Exploration expands through abilities found while navigating the Mainframe’s ruins.
- 04Programmable Enemies
- Some inhabitants can be modified so their behavior follows the player’s commands.
Recompile compared to similar games
Recompile combines Metroidvania exploration with 3D platforming, combat, and editable logic circuits that control parts of its environment. Sundered®: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic Metroidvania, while Jusant focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, and routes up a tower.
