We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Readers of literary classics who want to solve text-based puzzles
- Puzzle players who prefer substitution ciphers over action-focused gameplay
- People exploring different literary genres through short excerpts
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want mechanics beyond repeated substitution-cipher decoding may lose interest in the central puzzle format
- Those seeking fast-paced gameplay may find the contemplative, text-focused structure too slow
- Readers looking for longer, uninterrupted books may not want an experience built around selected excerpts
- People sensitive to references involving sex, violence, or alcohol may encounter unsuitable excerpts or synopses
Our take on Prose & Codes
The bounce point is the return to the same substitution-cipher system for each passage. Players who need changing mechanics or a faster pace may hit that wall after the initial novelty of decoding literary excerpts wears off.
What is Prose & Codes?
Prose & Codes turns over 400 selections from classic literature into substitution-cipher challenges.
The material covers eight categories, such as children’s fiction and horror, and offers four challenge levels. Once solved, the corresponding books can be read or downloaded online without charge. Additional features include reflective piano music, a low-light interface, and adjustable cipher lettering. Ten percent of every sale supports Project Gutenberg, a volunteer-run digital collection containing more than 60,000 ebooks. Certain passages and summaries refer non-graphically to sex, violence, or alcohol. The experience centers on deciphering literary text rather than offering varied gameplay systems.
