We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Action-adventure players who want trap-filled traversal with a single attempt per temple
- Competitive players who study other runners’ mistakes instead of playing in synchronous matches
- Players who enjoy collecting relics, unlocking equipment, and taking on increasingly dangerous routes
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking forgiving runs, since failure or accepting a lesser relic permanently removes access to that temple
- Players who want a fixed campaign or repeated access to the same levels, since claimed Legendary Relic temples disappear
- Players looking for direct real-time multiplayer combat rather than asynchronous competition
Our take on Phantom Abyss
The one-attempt temple structure gives each run lasting consequences, but it also removes failed or completed temples from future play. That trade-off favors tension and route reading over revisiting a familiar level to refine a strategy.
What is Phantom Abyss?
Phantom Abyss is an asynchronous multiplayer action-adventure game built around one-attempt temple runs.
Players navigate procedurally generated temples filled with hidden traps, chasms, branching routes, and pursuing guardians while seeking relics. Up to 20 phantoms from earlier attempts, including Steam friends, can reveal successful routes and fatal mistakes. Keys open deeper sections containing more valuable relics, while collected treasure can be offered at altars for temporary blessings such as a double jump, glide jump, extended slide, or damage protection. Unlockable whips provide minor benefits paired with curses. Temple Codes let friends retry failed runs, and Adventure Codes create playlists from previously attempted temples. Finding a temple’s Legendary Relic removes that temple permanently and awards the entire temple as a trophy.
How Phantom Abyss plays
- 01Phantom Run Lessons
- Recordings of up to 20 earlier players show routes, errors, and fallen whips during the same temple.
- 02Deeper Temple Sections
- Keys found in chests open lower areas containing increasingly valuable relics.
- 03Run Blessings
- Treasure placed at altars grants temporary abilities such as gliding, double jumping, sliding farther, or resisting damage.
- 04Cursed Whip Choices
- New whips can be unlocked and selected between runs, with each combining a minor benefit and a drawback.
- 05Shared Temple Codes
- Codes allow friends to attempt failed runs or access a playlist of temples previously entered.
