Our take on Pawnbarian
Instead of relying on a broad action set, combat uses cards based on chess pieces to determine movement and attack options. Its roguelike progression also emphasizes learning the tactical systems rather than accumulating permanent upgrades or assembling complex builds.
What is Pawnbarian?
Pawnbarian is a turn-based puzzle roguelike built around short runs on small dungeon boards.
Cards representing chess pieces determine how the hero moves, while combat centers on positioning around monsters and their abilities. Treasure can be spent to add powers to cards. Runs last 15–30 minutes, with six characters and three dungeons offering different approaches. After a run, the infinite Gauntlet provides a survival challenge, while Chains add difficulty modifiers. The game has no permanent upgrades and few unlocks; progression instead comes from learning its combat systems. Shops offer a limited set of decisions, while the main tactical challenge comes from responding to situations that emerge during combat. Players can learn the basics in minutes, including without prior chess knowledge.

Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based combat and deck-building, with attack tiles, combos, and skills used before confronting the Shogun. Pawnbarian instead bases movement and combat on chess-piece cards across dungeon runs, with card upgrades bought using treasure.
