We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Puzzle players who enjoy coordinating actions with recorded versions of their character.
- Players who want a one-screen puzzle format rather than a game built around larger environments.
- Players willing to work through challenging movement and problem-solving demands.
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who hit a wall when puzzles require both precise movement and problem solving.
- Players who prefer manual saves may find the automatic-only save system limiting.
- Players looking for a short completion may find the estimated 5-hour minimum and longer full-clear time too much.
Our take on Past Particles
The sticking point is coordinating with recorded versions of the character: players who cannot manage the movement mechanics alongside the puzzle logic may stall at the core solve loop. Manual saving is also unavailable, so anyone who wants to choose when progress is saved will hit a limit there.
What is Past Particles?
Past Particles is a one-screen puzzle game built around recording and replaying character movements.
Solving puzzles requires coordinating with earlier versions of the player while handling the movement mechanics and working through the problem. The game autosaves current progress; manual saving is unavailable. It includes 15 original soundtracks, some of which may not play until later progress. The estimated playtime is at least 5 hours, and clearing everything can take longer. Xbox and PS controllers are supported, with the connected controller’s “Configuration Support” unchecked. The game takes inspiration from Adolfo Bioy Casares’s 1940 work La Invención de Morel.
How Past Particles plays
- 01Recorded movement
- Character actions can be recorded and replayed so puzzles involve cooperating with earlier versions of the player.
- 02Automatic saving
- Current progress is saved automatically, with no manual save option.
- 03Original soundtrack
- The game contains 15 original tracks, and some may only be heard as progress advances.
- 04Controller support
- Xbox and PS controllers work when “Configuration Support” is unchecked for the connected controller.
