Is MONARK worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- RPG players who want tactical battles with customizable summoned units
- Fans of dark neo-fantasy settings centered on psychological themes
- Players who prefer story-driven investigations alongside combat
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a straightforward adventure may find the split between academy investigation, Otherworld exploration, and tactical battles demanding
- Those wanting a lighthearted or low-stakes RPG may not fit a story built around madness, corruption, and the risk of losing oneself
- Players looking for action without unit positioning or character development may prefer a different structure
- Players seeking a puzzle game, simulation, or non-RPG experience will not find those as the main focus
Our take on MONARK
Rather than treating psychological themes as background flavor, MONARK makes the protagonist’s Ego part of progression and ties it to the strength of summoned Fiends. Its structure also alternates between school investigation and tactical battles in a separate supernatural realm.
What is MONARK?
MONARK is an RPG set at Shin Mikado Academy, where a strange Mist drives the campus into madness.
The story moves between the academy and the Otherworld, a Daemon-filled dimension containing anomalies and seven Pactbearers corrupting the school. Psychological tests develop the protagonist’s Ego, which powers a battalion of customizable Fiends. Players select different Fiends, adjust their abilities and appearance, position units through a freeform tactical system, and fight alongside or against Pactbearers. Allies among the academy’s students and instructors contribute to the investigation. Progress involves uncovering the academy’s mysteries, resolving campus anomalies, breaking the Pactbearers’ pacts, and managing the danger of losing oneself to madness.
How MONARK plays
- 01Ego Development
- Psychological tests raise the protagonist’s Ego and increase the strength of commanded Fiends.
- 02Customizable Fiends
- Different Fiends can be unlocked, with their abilities and appearances adjusted for battle.
- 03Tactical Positioning
- A freeform combat system lets units be placed before attacks are unleashed.
- 04Dual-World Exploration
- The story alternates between Shin Mikado Academy and the Daemon-filled Otherworld.
- 05Academy Investigation
- Students and instructors assist with resolving anomalies and uncovering the source of the campus crisis.
MONARK compared to similar games
MONARK combines academy investigation, psychological tests, Fiend customization, and freeform tactical combat. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on exploring a strange city and an unconventional story, while Back to the Dawn focuses on prison survival, investigation, and escape. Tales of Symphonia presents an adventure about two interlocked worlds and a chosen figure rather than MONARK’s academy-based crisis and command system.
