- Players looking for a relaxed platformer may not suit the constant enemy spawning and very difficult encounters.
Our take on Level 20
The defining structure is the decision after each level: bank the collected cells in the city or push onward and risk losing everything. Death also resets the expedition, turning every advance into a choice between secure upgrades and deeper exploration.
What is Level 20?
Level 20 is a 2D pixel-art platform shooter built around an expedition through 20 randomly arranged underground levels.
The explorer gathers energy cells, survives escalating robot attacks, and reaches a teleport machine after each stage. At that point, the player can return to the Underground City to spend secured cells on equipment and skill-tree improvements, or continue upward while risking the entire haul. Losing all life also sends the explorer back to the city and removes collected cells.
Levels include destructible terrain, stairs, flying robots, laser cannons, guardian robots, and randomly appearing biomes and structures. Guardian encounters can change later runs by allowing those enemies to appear in earlier levels. The objective is to investigate a signal at level 15 and reach level 20.
How Level 20 plays
- 01Risk-based progression
- Returning to the city preserves collected cells, while advancing can increase the run's depth but puts the entire haul at risk.
- 02Randomized environments
- Each stage can use a randomly selected biome and may contain special structures.
- 03Terrain manipulation
- The explorer can build stairs and destroy parts of the environment to open routes.
- 04Skill tree upgrades
- Collected cells can unlock branches of abilities through the Improvement Merchant.
- 05Escalating robot threats
- The difficulty rises during exploration, while defeated guardian robots can return in earlier levels.
- 06Guardian encounters
- A guardian can block teleportation during its first encounter in a level until it is defeated.
