Our take on Trapped Souls
The bounce point arrives at the death system: a failed run removes all collected loot, and defeat on the final level also erases earned experience. Players who prefer retaining progress after defeat may stop there, before gear modification and deeper dungeon decisions take hold.
What is Trapped Souls?
Trapped Souls is a dark, third-person adventure in King Tarrius’s catacombs.
Players control a homunculus seeking to end an ancient curse, fighting with attacks, dodges, and blocks while looking for stronger gear. Equipment can be improved or enchanted, and gems placed in sockets can grant bonuses like fire-based attacks or protection from poison. The roguelike dungeon leads through a sequence of perilous trials, with dice rolls determining choices before challenges. Dying forfeits all loot collected on that run; losing on the last level also costs the experience gained. The dungeons can be tackled solo or in split-screen co-op for as many as four players. Each player keeps a separate supply of loot and gold, along with individual character progression.
How Trapped Souls plays
- 01Gear Modification

- 02Escalating Death Penalties
- Dying removes all found loot, while defeat on the final level also removes accumulated experience.
- 03Dice-Based Trials
- Dungeon progress depends on choosing outcomes from dice rolls before facing each challenge.
- 04Four-Player Split Screen
- Co-op gives each player separate loot, gold, and character progression.
- 05Connected Universe
- The story includes characters, references, and echoes from the world of No King No Kingdom.
Trapped Souls compared to similar games
Trapped Souls centers on third-person souls-like combat, loot collection, gear modification, and roguelike dungeon trials, unlike Ghost of a Tale, which emphasizes exploration, stealth, disguises, and conversations in an animal-populated medieval world. Vagante is also a dark fantasy adventure, while Trapped Souls adds split-screen co-op with separate loot, gold, and character progression.
