Our take on Hard to be a King
Rather than centering on a ruler who personally leads every task, the game makes kingship largely managerial: the player assigns work and balances resources while villagers carry out their jobs. Its focus is settlement organization and survival rather than direct battlefield command.
What is Hard to be a King?
Hard to be a King is a voxel strategy game about ruling a fantasy realm.
The king assigns tasks and balances resources while villagers handle work such as gathering, hunting, farming, crafting, mining, building and combat. Claim territory with banners; many jobs can only take place inside the realm, and banners also set its population limit. Voxel terrain lets workers dig resource cubes or use resources to build new ones.
The environment includes a growing plant supply and animals that can starve when food runs short. Villagers sleep when beds are available, work less effectively when tired, and flee to areas the king marks safe when threatened. Food production shifts from foraging early on toward farming later, while prepared and dried foods address energy needs and spoilage.
How Hard to be a King plays
- 01Delegated labor
- Specialist roles cover tasks including farming, hunting, construction, metalwork, food preparation and combat.
- 02Claimable territory
- Banners define where many jobs can be performed and determine the realm's population limit.
- 03Food-chain simulation
- Plants grow gradually, while deer and wolves can starve if their food supply disappears.
- 04Villager routines
- Available beds let peasants sleep, while fatigue reduces their work efficiency.
- 05Voxel construction
- Workers can extract resources by digging terrain cubes and use resources to place new cubes.
