Our take on Civitatem
Villagers build experience in their assigned specialties, making the workforce itself a progression system rather than a fixed set of interchangeable workers.
What is Civitatem?
Civitatem is a medieval settlement-building game in which villagers use their skills to develop a village in dangerous territory.
Assign people to tasks, meet their needs for food, shelter, and water, and train children at school. Villagers gain experience in their specialties, while a village elder remains available for tasks when others are asleep or injured. Explore procedurally generated land, send scouts to find other villages for trade, and gather books to research technologies. Seasons, weather, wildlife, raiders, and other events affect village life. Three difficulty levels offer different challenges and progression. After completing the game once, Free Mode removes events and combat. Victory requires a stable settlement and one of two end-game buildings.
How Civitatem plays
- 01Villager specializations
- People gain experience by performing their assigned work, and children can study to begin adulthood with stronger skills.
- 02Changing seasons
- Weather and temperature shape when crops can be planted and harvested.
- 03Scouting and trade
- Scouts can locate other villages for trade and find occasional rewards in explored regions.
- 04Difficulty options
- The game has three difficulty levels, while Free Mode becomes available after a completed playthrough and removes events and combat.
- 05Village survival needs
- Villagers require food, shelter, and water; unmet needs can lead to death or departure with family.
