Our take on FINAL FANTASY VII
The extra settings receive prominent attention, but they modify pacing and battle management rather than adding story content. The release is explicitly an upgraded 2013 edition, so the central appeal remains the original adventure and its existing narrative.
What is FINAL FANTASY VII?
FINAL FANTASY VII follows Cloud Strife, a former Shinra SOLDIER turned mercenary, as he joins Avalanche's resistance against the corporation's control of Mako energy.
The adventure begins in Midgar and expands into a battle over the planet's fate, while Cloud confronts his lost past. This Steam release is an upgraded version of the 2013 edition, with no story changes or additions. Added options include a mode that speeds up battles, travel, and selected events to three times normal speed; a setting that disables random encounters while retaining required story battles; and a battle mode that restores HP and MP and fills the Limit gauge. An autosave feature is also included.
How FINAL FANTASY VII plays
- 01Threefold Speed
- A faster mode applies during combat, movement, and certain events.
- 02Encounter Toggle
- Random battles can be disabled, but mandatory fights tied to story progression remain.
- 03Battle Assistance
- A selectable mode restores HP and MP during fights and fills the Limit gauge.
- 04Autosaving
- The upgraded edition adds an autosave function.
FINAL FANTASY VII compared to similar games
FINAL FANTASY VII centers on Cloud's role in Avalanche's resistance against Shinra and adds controls for speed, random encounters, battle recovery, and autosaving. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition is presented around an unconventional story, characters, and exploration of a strange city, while Back to the Dawn focuses on investigating crime and escaping a prison. Tales of Symphonia instead frames its RPG adventure around a Chosen One and two connected worlds.
