Our take on EMPTY SHELL
Each death replaces the current volunteer with another, while also changing the level layout and randomizing the new arrival’s starting equipment.
What is EMPTY SHELL?
EMPTY SHELL is a top-down survival horror game set in a secret industrial facility on a remote Japanese island.
Volunteers arrive for a recovery operation without knowing its full purpose. Explore the facility and uncover accounts of its past through logs and documents, including material from the 1950s. Each death puts a new volunteer under the player’s control, with randomized starting equipment; level layouts change when entering a new level or dying. Search rooms for weapons, ammunition, and gadgets, manage inventory space, solve puzzles, and fight different types of enemies. Upgrades and devices can be bought for use in combat. The experience combines dark corridors, exploration, scavenging, and survival across changing layouts.
How EMPTY SHELL plays
- 01New Volunteer on Death

- 02Changing Level Layouts

- 03Facility Records
- Recovered logs and documents trace the workplace’s history back to the 1950s.
- 04Inventory Management
- Limited carrying space requires choosing which scavenged items to keep.
