Our take on Eliza
The scripted counseling role keeps the story focused on Evelyn’s lack of control during sessions, but limits her direct agency in those scenes. The experience centers on following a narrative and its characters, with solitaire as an interlude rather than a separate gameplay focus.
What is Eliza?
Eliza is an interactive novel centered on a counseling app powered by artificial intelligence, the team behind it, and those who use its services.
Evelyn Ishino-Aubrey returns after a puzzling three-year disappearance and a departure from her technology career, taking a role as the app’s human intermediary. During appointments, she reads AI-generated dialogue but cannot choose what to say. As she meets clients in Seattle and gets reacquainted with people from her past, she weighs whether this form of counseling broadens access to therapy or gives technology companies more sway over people’s lives.
The narrative also follows her questions about her past and what lies ahead. Set in contemporary Seattle, the game includes painted scenes, more than a dozen voiced characters, and an original ambient score. Between sessions, players can play Kabufuda Solitaire, a version of solitaire using Japanese cards.
